Glenn Beck’s A.A. sponsor decides to drop him too, but not because he’s a racist

Glenn Beck loses another sponsor… his A.A. sponsor

"I was at a recent meeting with the two, and you could almost drink the tension between them," said one AA meeting attendee who prefered to remain anonymous. (Beck and Tipple pictured at a recent meeting- both are seated nearside with back facing camera- Beck wearing black, and Tipple wearing white)

"I was at a recent meeting with the two, and you could almost drink the tension between them," said one AA meeting attendee who prefered to remain anonymous. (Beck pictured at a recent meeting wearing black shirt nearest the camera- and Tipple beside him to his left wearing white.)

You can now add Darenn Tipple’s name to the growing list of sponsors who have dropped the doltish FoxNews show host.  Tipple had been Beck’s AA (Alcoholics’ Anonymous) sponsor for the past two years; a feat many thought was impossible considering that in 14 years, none of Beck’s previous sponsors had lasted more than six months. Tipple’s feat did not go unnoticed though, as he was presented with the Medal of Mettle at an AA banquet yesterday.  The medal is the highest honor given by the organization, and is only given to those who have shown unbelievable courage to stay sober in the face of insurmountable obstacles.

In an interview with Recovering Drunkard magazine, Tipple claimed that Beck “was impossible to get along with,” and “he felt himself getting dumber the more he got to know Beck.”  He went on to say that, “Glenn always insisted that people call him GB,” and “there wasn’t a meeting that Glenn didn’t cry at, sometimes I’d find him all teary eyed before the dang meeting even started.” The experience of sponsoring Beck became so draining that Tipple was even assigned an additional sponsor just to help him hang on to his sobriety. When asked how he felt after telling Beck the news, Tipple jokingly said, “I feel like doing some serious celebrating and getting super sh*t faced, but I’m not.”

Beck has gone through so many sponsors that AA organizers fear they might have run out of sponsors for him. In fact, AA organizers have been in deliberations for much of the week trying to decide on a solution to the sponsor shortage situation. A few fellow AA members suggested organizers consider allowing Beck to attend AA meetings only if he also attended AA2 (Assholes Anonymous) meetings. Some AA organizers have contemplated allowing Beck to become AA’s first self-sponsored member, but that wouldn’t solve the greater problem – the counter effect of Beck’s attendance at AA meetings.  Which has caused an alarming number of former Beck sponsors and fellow AA meeting attendees to relapse.  One member said, “I get hammered before the meeting if I know Glenn is going to be there, just to get through all his whining.”

The proposal favored by most of the AA organizers and members is to ban him from AA altogether.  A few disagree and say that despite his incessant sobbing, having Glenn at meetings actually makes them feel better about their lives. Beck has not issued a statement on all of this, but is said to be actively pursuing a new sponsor.

He really makes people call him GB? Those aren’t even good initials. Reminds me of “gang-bang”. We could start calling him GangBang Beck I suppose.

I would sponsor Beck, I would… of course, I’m not in AA so that should disqualify me. But I sure would get lots of practice with learning patience.

    • SandRider says:

I read on the internet that “GB” raped & murdered a girl while in an alcoholic blackout in 1990 …

    • Adam says:

Please remove this story. AA’s first principle is anonymity.

      • A. Zola says:

AA is not covered under any legal status re: anonymity. That is reserved for the Catholic Church and confessions made to a priest. In AA, we all are just average citizens. Removing the story would make it appear AA is a cult that has to have secrets like Scientology.

  2. Alvin says:

Ok, I am calling BS on this story. Once again, personal attacks are not going to win you the war you are waging. If you can’t fight the truth, you drop to personal insults and threats.

  3. Jill H says:

    Beck is scum.

  4. FR33DOM_FTW says:

What a dramatically, theatric blog. You know, Beck is just a man, like everyone else… he has his own talents AND short comings, as do we all. It is the public who should be ashamed of themselves for not allowing him to handle his private affairs privately. The media is a cold whore, I don’t care if sponsors have dropped him or if he cries before or during an AA meeting, and good for him that he is attending. I grew up with an alcoholic father, my spouse has also struggled with alcohol, and God bless those who can overcome it.

The way that whole thing was written reminds me of my Fiancé’s ex-wife, cold, bitter, hateful, lashing out and saying things purely to hurt… that is not respectable, nor is it “news” or “entertainment.”

  5. Well, Glenn lost his own soul years ago. He might as well lose everything else.

  6. IMI says:

We already know “GB” is an A-hole, so this isn’t news to anyone. But what goes on in meetings, should stay in meetings unless the person wants to talk about their own experiences – and not about anyone else. This is the type of muckraking people accuse the conservatives of doing, which isn’t working out too well for them. I’d like to see neo-con slurs and people like Beck and Coulter continue to have less and less weight. However there is only one way that can happen; stop buying into it.

  7. FR33DOM_FTW says:

Are you guys tarded? You are really going to be THAT juvenile and pick on someones name or what they like to be called? That’s school yard folly. You are all a bunch of goobers lol

The only reason why you are picking on him personally is because you can’t prove him wrong, discuss the politics…

    This is absolutely pathetic.

    • sally spencer says:

Aside from the violation of AA anonymity traditions, do you not know that use of or referral to “tarded” (and its root word) is completely disrespectful to persons with intellectual challenges?! Please be soberly sensitive .
      Thank you.

  8. Myndie says:

all this information given in this article is supposed to have remained anonymous. Wheter GB is an ass or not. This doesn’t seem like the AA program I have known for 25+ years. It totally against traditions: AA Traditions

    1. Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.A. unity.

    2. For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority – a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.

    3. The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking.

    4. Each group should be autonomous except in matters affecting other groups or A.A. as a whole.

    5. Each group has but one primary purpose-to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

    6. An A.A. group ought never endorse, finance
or lend the A.A. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

    7. Every A.A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

    8. Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.

    9. A.A., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

    10. Alcoholics Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.A. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

    11. Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio and films.

    12. Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities.

    • Fred says:

Hey Mate – I see AA all over the news and on chat shows these days.. Whats up with that ? Supposed to be anonymous & secret isnt it ?

    • another one of us says:

I go to AA. The Traditions are great. However, many people do NOT follow the Traditions. I can see why no one wants to sponsor Glenn Beck. I don’t like the man, either, and think he is nuts. On the other side of it all, many sponsors act like they can belittle folks and have the “do as I say not as I do” while their own character defects are running rampant and their “living principles” are bunk.

  9. jdj says:

Well, this is all aparently bullshit……and the writer doesn’t know anything about AA .
Nobody can get banned from AA.
AA does not have organizational meetings members.

This entire article is …mad up.

    • Mr. Rhinohouse says:

Problem w/AA (I tried for 1 1/2 years) is you lose your sense of humor. Yours obviously ran out of the barn ages ago.

    • SandRider says:

“This entire article is …mad up. ”

      that it is.

      and yo, “Mad Ups” 2 2-safe !!

      keepin it rail, yo !

    • AA CEO says:

I am the CEO of aa and i have banned you. i will tell all the secretaries at your mtgs not to sign your court card anymore for your 6th dui. so, quit telling people lies about AA. my consortium of drunks makes the rules and now i am taxing all the mtgs for a 2 point vig. that is now the new nut in AA. 2 points for m, the boss. your asses are being taxed. 2 points from every 7th tradition is now mine!!!!
      capeeesh?

  10. Brent says:

I might agree with all of you about not airing personal stuff about GB, but he would do the same. Does two wrongs make it right? NO, but I don’t have a TV show and millions of dollars by spreading filth and half truth. GB is spreading the propaganda that got both Kennedy’s assassinated. He’s working up fringe groups and unstable people who take everything he says as truth and any fanatic with a cause is a very dangerous thing…

  11. Misty P says:

I think this is hysterically funny…..AND completely fictional. There is no Recovering Drunkard magazine, AA does not have organizers, sponsors are not appointed & no one truly sober would ever give an interview about someone else’s in AA.
Anyone who thinks AA people don’t have a sense of humor hasn’t been to enough meetings.

  12. Ez2find says:

Glenn is an a-hole, but, a-holes are welcome in AA (there’s a lot of them)….he probably lost his sponsor because he’s not doing the work….he’s just sniveling like a baby, and has thing the for crying….grow a pair Glenn….it’s not your mama’s fault, even if it is, YOU gotta do the work…….

    • AA CEO says:

HI FAMILY……. I am sure most of you here are members of aa. well, I AM THE FREAKIN CEO OF AA and i decide who gets sober and who stays sober. unnnnerstand tards???
i knew bill and bob quite well and they said i own the whole dealio now.
so give glenn a break. he is having a little public 5th step and will get back on track.

I DEMAND YOU LEAVE GLENN alone. but please donate more money to AAWS so i can have a few more bucks.

Okay, who gets to be Captain Obvious? This is PARODY! Can you not see that? Have we all just completely lost the last vestiges of senses of humor because we either loathe this failure of a standup comedian or we would wipe his backside for him? You know, once we had a fine and robust tradition of satire in this country, sometimes with hilarious results. Who can forget Dan Akroyd as Jimmy Carter promising to be a lusty president, or chevy chase as Gerald Ford, constantly destroying the Oval Office with his violent stumbling. Glenn Beck is a complete hack, in my opinion, but that is beside the point. He has made himself outrageous and makes moronic claims about the administration on a daily basis, he deserves all of this and more.

  15. barf says:

anyone in aa is i bunch of wine-ers….. it used as a crutch for the weak, but it is also used as a weapon by some of them to judge anyone else.

also, until aa, stops ALL drug use, including nicotine, and caffine, at their meetings their whole program is a sham…..

all aa is, and indoctrination into the lie of christ…

  16. Cool site, love the info.

  17. NoCents says:

Is this some sort of Punk’d-type thing where half of the comments are actually parodies? Do people have their Google Alerts link them to any page that mentions Glenn Beck and AA, and stumble upon articles without tthe benefit of context? Has Glenn Beck ever denied that he murdered and raped a woman in 1990?

  18. This blog rocks! I gotta say, that I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks,

I’m going to have to run up the BS flag on this one. It this is how AA functions (assigning sponsors, so-signing sponsors who relapse because of a difficult sponsee, et nausium), I’m so very grateful that I’m not in the fellowship. Agreed, Beck knows nothing about maintaining personal anonymitym but this article and many of the comments are pure drivel.

  30. Cantakerous says:

Well Too Safe is a heck of a journalist and the article was near perfect representation about how it really is in AA.

There are no awards, sponsors aren’t assigned and it isn’t organized. I think Too Safe and Glenn Beck were in one of those fancy wanna-be recovery vacation money pits.

This article would have been better titled “My Love of Glenn Beck”.

  31. gjdagis says:

This article is so much crap that it’s unbelievable ! So many things said in it are TOTALLY opposite of how AA, or the vast majority of their members, would act and/or react to ANYONE in their program. This is thinly veiled political CRAP !

  32. Mark K says:

Anybody who knows the AA program can easily see what a crock this entire article really is.

  33. Dave G. says:

“What you see here, what you hear here, let it stay here when you leave here.”
    HERE ,HERE!

I don’t give the individual who “revealed” this story any credibility.

What happens in AA, stays in AA.

People need to stop taking Beck’s inventory and start looking at their own inventories….

  34. Bergg22 says:

Ok! How the hell did I not know about this medal? Where is mine? Why has AA not honored me, my sponsor, or anyone else I know helping difficult people?

    WHERE IS MY MEDAL?!!?

  35. Rosamond says:

That always appears to be and so basic once you demonstrate them that adheres to that. Even now should understand whatever you mentioned all over again.
